Things to see and do whatever the weather.Park House is the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful Ribble Valley and Trough of Bowland. There are plenty of good pubs and restaurants,wine merchants and specialist food retailers. Explore Clitheroe Castle, the romantic ruins of Sawley Abbey and Whalley Abbey and the many delightful little villages, with their lovely churches. There are regular Farmers Markets and specialist garden centres, balloon flights, paragliding and pretty cycle routes, footpaths, fishing and golf - the choice is endless. Shopping The A59 will take you to the local market towns of Clitheroe and Skipton, with their open-air markets and many specialist shops selling everything from fine wines and designer clothes to speciality cheese and sausages. The cities of Manchester, with its renowned Trafford Centre, Bradford, Preston and Leeds are all easily accessible. Clitheroe has several antique shops that are also worth a visit as does nearby Settle and Skipton. There is also a Secondhand and Antiquarian bookshop in Clitheroe. Close to us are three working preserved steam railways. Each is run by volunteers dedicated to keeping this historic mode of transport alive, for us all to enjoy. KEIGHLEY AND WORTH VALLEY RAILWAY Probably Britain's best loved preserved steam railway famous as a location for films such as the Railway Children and Yanks. EMBSAY AND BOLTON ABBEY STEAM RAILWAY The Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway runs between Embsay Station, built in 1888 and the new award-winning Bolton Abbey Station. The 5-mile journey through the Yorkshire Dales passes Holywell Halt, a typical rural halt station. There are picnic areas at all stations. Run regular steam specials. We are a short drive from the historic market town of Settle, the start of the wonderful Settle to Carlisle railway journey. Family History We are situated directly opposite the parish church of St Mary's in Gisburn. Outdoor ActivitiesClick here for walking and cycling leaflets Gisburn is surrounded by a rich patchwork of fields hedgerows and small woods accessible by footpaths and quiet country lanes. The Forest of Bowland A.O.N.B. This is one of hidden gems of our countryside and is stunning throughout the year. Footpaths meander through wooded valleys and heather clad hills and along scenic rivers. The Forest of Bowland is the stronghold of the majestic Hen Harrier which can be spotted flying over the fells especially during the breeding season when they are feeding their young.
Gisburn forest is a place you cannot miss, with an extensive network of footpaths and cycle ways, and with fantastic views. If you fancy catching your own dinner, why not visit Stocks Reservoir Fly Fishery near Slaidburn. Set in stunning scenery with cafe and toilet facilities, it's also a lovely place for a walk.
The Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District National Parks are within one hours travelling, containing some of Britain's most spectacular scenery.
